Barcelona / Top 10 Attractions for Kids

1. Barcelona Beaches

There are conveniently located beaches near or in Barcelona. Choose from the dynamic and often crowded Barcelona Beach which is closest to the city; Icaria Beach or Bogatell Beach which are near to the Port Olympic and have play apparatus on the beaches or Chiringuitos Beach among others. When you're traveling with kids avoid Mar Bella Beach where clothing is optional.

2. Barcelona Zoo

Located within the Parc de la Ciutadella this zoo has the full range of animals together with amenities like picnic areas, a restaurant and a gift store. There are pony rides, electric cars and a mini-train. While in the park enjoy the other attractions like the lake where you can rent a row boat and the many play areas.

3. Magic Fountain of Montjuic

See the fountains dance to music and coordinated lights. This 10 minute spectacle performs every half hour after dark from about 7pm to 8:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, October to April and nightly from Thursday to Sunday from 9:30pm to 11pm.

4. Chocolate Restaurant

Pop into any of the cafes (granjas) which serve churros and chocolate. The sweet churros donut-like pastries go together brilliantly with the extra thick hot chocolate. Try La Pallaresa on Calle Petritxol 11 or La Granja Chocolate Restaurant café at Carrer Banys Nous 4.

5. Parc Guell

Although the city has many wonderful parks this one will interest the parents just as much as the kids. Here the whole family can run around in the open space and enjoy several architectural structures created by Gaudi.

6. Illa Fantasia Water Park

Reach this water park by a 30 minute train, here you'll find more than 20 water slides and 3 pools. There are pools and activities for every age group.  The park is only open during the summer months (1st June – 11th September).

7. Port Aventura Theme Park

This Universal Studios park is about an hour away by train (so kids get a train ride as well) it is one of the best in Europe and has the biggest roller coaster in Europe (with 8 loops). The park is divided into five themes and has rides for the whole family. Next door is a relatively new water attraction, Caribe Aquatic Parc.

8. Tibidabo Amusement park and Mount Tibidabo

Originally opened in 1908 and having undergone several renovations the park has more than 30 attractions ranging from the traditional fun fair rides to modern tummy-turning roller coasters. The park is better for younger kids and kids under 90cm tall get in free. To reach the top of the mountain you'll have another fun ride on the funicular.

9. Barcelona Aquarium

This aquarium specializes in Mediterranean marine animals but there are also creatures from other seas. It has Europe's largest walk way through the aquarium tanks so that the sharks and other fish are swimming all around you. This is one of the largest aquariums in Europe and is located near the Maremagnum shopping center.

10. Cosmocaixa

This is a science museum geared towards children under ten years old, it features an Amazonian rainforest, planetarium and three rooms with 5 exhibitions. There are interactive and multimedia displays to keep kids learning, experimenting and having fun.

11. Boat Excursions

Take a ride on one of the Barcelona ferries which makes a 35 minute tour of the harbor or a 90 minutes trip up the coast and back. Kids will love the double decker Las Golondrinas boats.
